Fur Salon, City Square, Melbourne

Architect: Six Degrees Architects

Fur takes the notion of small very seriously – the hair salon taking up just 23 square metres. Long-time collaborator Six Degrees brought Frank onboard to create a flexible environment that could expand and contract in concert with the number of clients being pampered and primped, and to maximise every millimetre of space. The mirrors perceptually extend the space and the wall of recycled basketball court is built as a box in which to store products, equipment and chairs when they’re not in use. The rotating mirror-tiled columns are not only a nod to ’70s kitsch and disco culture, but they also bring the street into the salon and send fragments of reflected light back out into the pubic square.
