Caboose, City Square

Architect: Six Degrees Architects

Another small venue that asserts itself under the bulk of the City Square’s Westin hotel is Caboose. The coloured-glass exterior of this cafe thumbs its nose at stasis, popping out to colonise a piece of City Square as its rolls forward of the building’s facade to catch the sun’s rays during business hours. Caboose’s dynamic front is complemented by the richly textured materials and finishes inside: cast-plaster panelling, rough slate, metal mesh, raw timber, suspended concrete beams and Pirelli rubber flooring. The heavy red girder that protrudes above the front wall runs back through the interior and is reflected in the red carpet of the corridor; together they bring order to the texturally busy palette.
